DEAN: The New Account Number for the Digital Euro
The European Central Bank (ECB) plans to introduce the Digital Euro Account Number (DEAN), which will serve as the new account number for the digital euro. This measure is part of a comprehensive strategy for implementing the digital euro, which will function as digital central bank money in the euro area. The DEAN is expected to exist alongside the International Bank Account Number (IBAN) and aims to facilitate the identification of payers and payees in online transactions. The DEAN will consist of 18 alphanumeric characters. The immutable prefix "EU" will form the beginning of the number, followed by two check digits designed to prevent input errors.
An indicator digit will specify whether it is a personal account (digit "0") or a business account (digit "1"). The last 13 digits of the DEAN will be a serial number that uniquely identifies the account. Private customers will be assigned a single DEAN, while business customers will have the option to hold multiple DEANs. This flexibility is intended to meet the diverse needs of businesses that may require multiple accounts for different business areas. Thus, the DEAN will play a central role in payment transactions between individuals and companies.
The ECB emphasizes that the DEAN is necessary for online payments, but offline transactions via Near Field Communication (NFC) will also be possible. In these offline payments, users can transfer money without requiring an internet connection. The transaction occurs by holding the devices together, enabling immediate processing. The introduction of the DEAN is closely linked to the development of the digital euro, which is designed as a cashless payment method. The ECB has already announced that the digital euro will play an important role in the future financial landscape.
Thus, DEAN will not only represent a technical innovation but also promote a cultural shift in the handling of money and payments. The DEAN is expected to be gradually introduced in the coming years, with the ECB planning to continuously increase the number of DEAN holders. However, the exact timeline for the introduction of the digital euro and the DEAN has not yet been established. The ECB has emphasized that the implementation must be carefully planned to ensure security and user-friendliness. The ECB has already conducted initial tests on the functionality of the digital euro and the DEAN.
These tests aim to ensure that the systems are robust and secure before they are made accessible to the general public. The results of these tests will be crucial for the further development and implementation of the digital euro. The DEAN will be significant not only for private users but also for businesses. The ability to hold multiple DEANs opens up new avenues for companies to manage their finances and conduct transactions.
This could be particularly advantageous for companies operating in various markets or regions. The ECB has emphasized that the DEAN and the digital euro aim to enhance the efficiency and security of payments. The introduction of this new account number is seen as a step towards a modern and digital financial infrastructure. The ECB plans to gradually introduce the DEAN over the next few years, with the first users expected in 2027.
