Google Changes Backup Policies for Android Users
Google announced a significant change for Android users on July 7, 2026. From now on, all data created through Android backups will be counted against the storage space in the Google account. This measure particularly affects new users, while existing users will gradually face this regulation in the coming months. Prior to this change, only content in Google Photos and images and videos from MMS backups were counted against the storage quota.
The new backup data will, on average, require about 40 megabytes of additional storage space, which could lead to a quicker depletion of available storage for many users. However, Google has announced that the impact of this change is expected to be limited. Users will also receive new settings that give them more control over which data is backed up. A new feature will allow users to decide which app data is included in the backup. Additionally, Google will soon introduce the option to exclude device settings, call history, as well as SMS and MMS messages from the backup.
These adjustments are intended to help users manage their storage space more efficiently and back up only the data that is important to them. In May 2026, Google already reduced the free storage for new accounts from 15 gigabytes to 5 gigabytes, unless the user links a phone number to the account. This measure could further exacerbate the situation for many users, especially if they have already backed up a large amount of data in Google Cloud. The new backup policies may lead users to consider alternative backup methods to secure their data. Google also offers paid options to expand storage, including 100 GB for €1.99 per month and 200 GB for €2.99 per month.
The implementation of these changes occurs in a context where Google continues to work on improving its services. Users can look forward to new and powerful features in Google Gemini, which will be offered as part of the storage expansions. The adjustments to the backup policies are part of a broader strategy by Google aimed at increasing user control over their data. The exact timelines for the gradual rollout of the new policies for existing users are not yet known. The changes take effect while Google continues to enhance the user experience and integrate new features into its services. The new backup feature is expected to be available to all users in the coming months. The backup data of Android users will now be counted against the storage space in their Google accounts, representing a significant change for many users.
