Google Enhances Backup Feature for Android Users

Google has launched a new feature to enhance data backup for Android users. This innovation allows users to create and manage backups for individual apps. Previously, it was only possible to enable backup for app data across the board, meaning all applications were affected. With this feature, users can now selectively choose which apps to back up. The new backup option can be found in the settings of Android devices under Google Services > Backup > Backup Details.

A list of suggested apps is displayed there, sorted in descending order by storage usage. Users have the option to enable or disable backup for specific apps, providing more precise control over available cloud storage. Once activated, the data of the selected apps will be backed up in cloud storage. Users without a Google One subscription receive 15 GB of free storage, provided they register their phone number. This limitation may lead to storage being quickly depleted if many apps are backed up.

The ability to back up individual apps represents a significant advantage. It is important to note that previously backed-up data will be irretrievably deleted if cloud backup for a specific app is disabled. This could be significant for users who wish to manage their data carefully. The new feature may also help optimize data consumption, as users can decide whether the backup should occur only over Wi-Fi or also via mobile data. Google is gradually rolling out the new backup feature to all users already using Android 16 or Android 17.

Particularly, users of Google Pixel smartphones will benefit from this innovation. Other manufacturers are expected to follow in the coming weeks, further increasing the feature's availability. The update containing the new backup feature is part of Google Play Services version 26.24. Most users will receive this update automatically, facilitating the implementation of the new feature. Users can check which version is currently installed on their device in the settings under Apps > All Apps > Google Play Services.

The introduction of this feature could also impact the use of cloud services. Users who can manage their data more efficiently may be more inclined to utilize cloud storage. This could lead to increased demand for cloud services, especially as users recognize the benefits of targeted data backup. The new backup feature is part of Google's ongoing efforts to improve the usability and security of its services.

With the ability to back up specific apps, users are given more control over their data. This could also help strengthen users' trust in cloud storage. The feature is expected to be available to all Android users using the corresponding versions in the coming weeks. Google has announced that full availability of the feature is aimed for by the end of July 2026.
