Microsoft Tests Cloud Rebuild for Windows 11

Microsoft has begun testing a new feature called Cloud Rebuild, which aims to allow users to easily reinstall non-bootable Windows PCs. This feature was first announced in November 2025 and is currently available in the experimental versions of Windows 11, specifically in the Insider Experimental Preview Build 26300.8772. The Cloud Rebuild feature provides a complete reinstallation of the operating system, even if Windows no longer starts. Unlike the previous option "Reset this PC," Cloud Rebuild downloads both the Windows target image and the necessary drivers directly from Windows Update. This enables recovery without physical installation media or custom images.

To use the Cloud Rebuild feature, users must access the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). There, they select the options "Troubleshoot" and "Recovery and Uninstallation" to initiate the Cloud Rebuild option. An internet connection via wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi is required to download the necessary files. Before starting the rebuild, users must verify the target Windows build, edition, and language. They must also confirm a warning about data loss, as the Cloud Rebuild feature will delete all existing files on the computer and format the storage device.

Currently, according to Microsoft, the Cloud Rebuild feature is intended for system administrators and not for private users. This could mean that the feature will initially be tested in corporate environments before being made available to a broader user base. The introduction of this feature could significantly change the way users handle non-functional PCs. Until now, reinstallation has often involved considerable effort, as either a physical installation medium was required or the installation had to be performed from the cloud. The Cloud Rebuild feature could greatly simplify this process.

Microsoft has not yet provided specific information on the advantages of the Cloud Rebuild feature compared to the previous cloud recovery. It remains unclear whether there are significant differences in performance or user-friendliness. The Cloud Rebuild feature could also be a response to the growing demands for IT security and the need for rapid recovery solutions in businesses. Given the increasing threats from cyberattacks, an efficient way to restore systems is crucial.

The testing of the Cloud Rebuild feature is part of Microsoft's ongoing efforts to improve the user experience and simplify the management of Windows systems. The feature may be made available in future updates for all users, although a specific date has not yet been announced. Microsoft plans to continue testing and optimizing the Cloud Rebuild feature before potentially providing it in a stable version for all users. The exact details regarding widespread availability are still unknown.
