WhatsApp Ends Support for Android 5.0 and 5.1

WhatsApp has announced that as of September 8, 2026, support for devices running Android 5.0 and Android 5.1 will be discontinued. This decision follows a review of the messenger's system requirements, which are regularly updated. The affected Android versions are now over ten years old and are classified as outdated by WhatsApp. Support for Android 6 and higher versions will remain in place.

According to WhatsApp, only a small number of users are still on Android 5.0 and 5.1. Statcounter reported in May 2026 that Android 5.0 has a global market share of 2.02 percent, which corresponds to approximately 80 to 90 million users. The decision to discontinue support is also a response to the security risks associated with using outdated software. Devices that no longer receive software and security updates pose an increased risk to users. Therefore, WhatsApp recommends upgrading to a newer Android version to ensure the security of communications.

To inform users about the upcoming end of support, WhatsApp will display a notification in the app. This will appear when the app is opened and will indicate that WhatsApp will no longer function on the affected device. The message will essentially state: "Later this year, WhatsApp will no longer work on this device." Users affected by this change should back up their chats before September 8, 2026. WhatsApp provides the option to save chats either via Google Drive or locally on the device.

These backed-up chats can then be transferred to a new device that runs a supported Android version. Currently, the latest version of Android is Android 17. New Android versions are regularly introduced, and users should ensure that their devices are up to date to receive the best features and security updates. Support for older versions is increasingly being limited to enhance the user experience. WhatsApp has previously taken similar measures to discontinue support for outdated systems.
