WhatsApp Introduces Usernames for German Users

WhatsApp users in Germany can now reserve a username that will be displayed in the app. This innovation was announced by Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, and aims to strengthen user privacy. The feature was initially rolled out to select users in April 2026 and is now being launched worldwide. The introduction of usernames is intended to allow users to avoid sharing their phone numbers with every contact. WhatsApp explains that sharing a mobile number is often perceived as a significant step, as it is associated with many personal aspects of life.

The new approach is designed to make it easier for users to communicate with new contacts without disclosing their phone numbers. Reserving a username can be done through the app's settings under the menu item Account > Username. The option is being rolled out gradually, so not all users will have immediate access. The username must be between 3 and 35 characters long and contain at least one letter. Allowed characters include lowercase letters, digits, periods, and underscores, but the name cannot start with "www" or end with common top-level domains.

To ensure that users can secure their desired names, WhatsApp opened reservations early. With over 3 billion users worldwide, the likelihood is high that many names are already taken. Users who are unsure can use a name generator to receive suggestions. For businesses and content creators, there is an option to retain a name already claimed on Instagram or Facebook. This is intended to strengthen users' brand identity and enable a consistent presence across different platforms.

The feature is seen as particularly beneficial for businesses looking to reach their customers via WhatsApp. Another aspect of the new feature is the ability to set a username key. This key functions similarly to a password and must be entered by the person with whom one wishes to chat. However, this option is not mandatory, allowing users to decide whether they want this additional security. The introduction of usernames is considered part of a broader strategy by Meta to enhance user privacy.
