Windows 11 Update Causes Remote Desktop Issues

Windows 11 Update Causes Remote Desktop Issues

After the recent security updates for Windows 11, numerous users are experiencing difficulties with the Remote Desktop feature. Microsoft has officially acknowledged the issue and provided initial workarounds. The updates KB5083769 and KB5082052, which were distributed in April 2026, were originally intended to close security vulnerabilities and introduce new features. The update KB5083769 introduces additional protective mechanisms for Remote Desktop connections to address the vulnerability CVE-2026-26151. This vulnerability allows manipulated RDP files to be exploited.

However, users are reporting display errors that occur after installing the update. A common issue is that the warning message when opening Remote Desktop files is not displayed correctly. Text in the warning window may overlap, and buttons are partially obscured. This significantly complicates operation and can, in some cases, even render the feature unusable. Systems with multiple monitors, especially when different scaling is used, are particularly affected.

For example, a scaling of 100 percent on one monitor and 125 percent on another can lead to the described problems. In corporate environments where Remote Desktop is frequently used, this can have significant impacts on workflows. Microsoft has recommended two workarounds to circumvent the issues. The first solution is to set a uniform scaling for all connected monitors. Users are advised to open the display settings and select the same value under "Scaling and Layout" for each monitor.

The second solution recommends using the keyboard instead of the mouse. Users can switch between options using the Tab key and confirm selections with the Spacebar. This method allows users to continue operating the faulty warning window, even if the graphical display is incorrect. In addition to the issues with the Remote Desktop feature, some companies are reporting difficulties with BitLocker recovery prompts following the April updates. It is currently unclear whether there is a connection between these issues and the recent updates.

However, Microsoft has announced that it will investigate the issue. A fix for the Remote Desktop problems is expected in a future update. Microsoft has not yet provided a specific date for the release of this update but is actively working on a solution. The vulnerability CVE-2026-26151 affects not only Windows 11 but could also impact other systems that utilize similar Remote Desktop functionalities.

Microsoft has urged users to install the updates to protect their systems, even though this may lead to temporary issues with the user interface. The security updates were released on April 11, 2026, and are part of Microsoft's regular patch releases. Users should install the updates to safeguard their systems against potential attacks, even if this entails temporary limitations.
