Silent Swap: New Threat for Crypto Users

Cybersecurity researchers have discovered an active campaign aimed at stealing cryptocurrencies by secretly replacing wallet addresses during user-initiated transactions. This threat, referred to as Silent Swap by McAfee Labs, utilizes fake Google Notes extensions to carry out its attacks. The Silent Swap campaign is distributed through unsigned installers, which have been observed in both .NET and Golang variants. These installers are designed to infiltrate users' browsers and manipulate wallet addresses without users noticing. A key feature of this malware is its ability to monitor the user's clipboard.

When a user copies a wallet address, the malware replaces it with an address belonging to the attacker. This typically occurs at the moment the user intends to conduct a transaction. McAfee researchers have found that the Silent Swap campaign is particularly active and spreading rapidly. The malware has disseminated across various online forums and social media platforms, disguised as a useful extension.
